CNIB client Dylan Wood (6), big brother Aidan and their mom Gillian Irving attended yesterday's launch of the TD Summer Reading Club at Toronto Public Library's Northern District Branch. Dylan, Aidan and the other kids attending the launch, were presented with stylish 'Splash!' TD Summer Reading Club t-shirts which they're wearing in this photo.
TD Bank Group announced a multi-year, $3.7-million renewed investment to the program to help Library and Archives Canada, Toronto Public Library and CNIB run the TD Summer Reading Club through to 2014.
As well as hearing this important announcement, we all grooved along to the Shark Attack song, led by Lisa Heggum, Toronto Public Library's Child & Youth Advocate. Representatives from Library & Archives Canada and TPL spoke about the importance of summer reading for promoting literacy.
And then there was the joke about a chicken, a frog and a Librarian, as told by Frank McKenna (TD Bank Group)! For those of you who haven't heard it, here's the joke: A chicken goes into a Library and says to the Librarian 'book, book, book'. So the Librarian gives the chicken a book. The chicken leaves, comes back half an hour later and again says 'book, book, book' so the Librarian gives the chicken a few more books. After the chicken comes back a third time, the Librarian decides to follow the chicken, to see what he's doing with all the books he's borrowing! The Librarian sees the chicken is delivering the books to a frog and as soon as the new books are dropped off, the frog is croaking 'Read-it, Read-it.'
Al Jameson, Chair of CNIB's National Board of Directors, was invited to speak. He thanked TD for their generous funding, which enables CNIB to offer books and programming in alternate formats. This means that kids with print disabilities like Dylan can participate in the TD Summer Reading Club, enjoying many of the same books as their siblings and friends.
Dylan and his mom are eager to investigate accessing CNIB books through their local branch of Toronto Public Library so that Dylan and his brothers and sisters can all enjoy the 'Splash' TD Summer Reading Club together. After the presentation, they spent a few minutes mingling and meeting the speakers.
And finally, a picture of Al Jameson (left), standing next to Cecilia Muir (Assistant Deputy Minister, Library and Archives Canada), Jane Pyper (City Librarian, Toronto Public library) and Frank McKenna (Deputy Chair, TD Bank Group). They're standing in front of the colourful Splash! TD Summer Reading Club poster designed by illustrator Kim LaFave.
Just a few more weeks until the kids are all out of school and into the pool!
Frank McKenna's message to the kids attending the launch says it all: 'Summer is a fun time. And we want you to enjoy every single minute of it. That includes visiting the library and finding many great books to read. It's a wonderful way to beat the heat, cool down, and enjoy a great escape.'
