Welcome to our next riveting edition of, "As the Jaws Tips Turn".
Last blog entry, I showed you two more quick navigation keys within your browser. Now, I'll demonstrate how the Jaws search function works and 4 more keys to ease the use of internet navigation. Ready? Here we go!
Where is it:
TAB TAB TAB, TAB TAB TAB. Oh, I just missed it.
Sometimes, finding information on a web page can be frustrating. You know approximately where it is, but you don't want to waste your time navigating through the myriad links, headings, etc. You just want to get to the item you're looking for. In some instances, quick navigation keys may get you close to the information, but not close enough. This is where the search function comes into play.
We're going to use
www.cbc.ca as our web page example. I've spent enough time on this page (after hours of course), to know that the weather comes right after the "change city" link. Instead of hitting TAB a bunch of times until I reach "change city", I'll search for it. To start a search, press CONTROL+F. Type in your search term "change city" (without the quotes), and press ENTER.
Once the information is found, press the DOWN ARROW to hear today's weather. If you want to repeat the search, press the function key F3. Try searches on your favourite web pages.
But we're not finished:
I promised a few more keys to our internet navigation arsenal. And here they are:
JAWSKEY+F5: brings up a list of form fields. This is the same as pressing the F key, however it gives it to you in a navigable list.
JAWSKEY+F6: Gives you a list of headings. Remember the headings key? That's right the H key.
JAWSKEY+F7: Brings up a list of links. Same as pressing TAB.
Finally, JAWS+F9: gives you access to a list of frames. The key mnemonic for this is the letter M.
What are the advantages of these lists? Well, they are navigable via the Up and DOWN ARROW keys or by the first letter of the particular piece of information that you are looking for. They are also simply a different way of accessing internet web pages.
So, we're finally done with internet navigation. This doesn't mean that we covered everything. We covered enough for you to get a handle on your internet experience, and hopefully, a more enjoyable one. To see a list of keys that will be helpful for you in your browser of choice, press JAWSKEY+H. See you on the Internet highway. Wave if you pass by won't you?
The bonus key for this week is JAWSKEY+F3. This creates a list of all possible elements found on the page.
