The more you read these tips, the more you'll find that I'm really into customizing. And why not. You spend a lot of time on your computer, so make a few changes, make it comfortable for yourself.
When opening Outlook, the first thing you'll encounter is the message list. You can move through the list with the UP and DOWN ARROWS. Press ENTER on a message to read it. All pretty basic. But, did you know that you could format the way the list is displayed? It's true, I'm not pulling your leg. I am tying your shoes together though. So how is it done you ask? Read on.
Customize current view:
So, we're going to visit the view menu to accomplish this task.
1. From the message list, you can press the ALT key and then right arrow to the view menu, or simply press ALT+V.
2. Press the DOWN ARROW to find "current View" and press ENTER.
3. Press the UP ARROW until you hear "Customize Current View" and press ENTER.
4. Press ENTER on the first thing you land on. It's the fields, Importance, reminder, yada yada yada button. Jaws is giving you lots of info there. All we're doing is opening the area where we can choose the fields modification dialog window.
Let's get working:
What, we're not done? We haven't even really started yet. There are many options and modifications that we can do on this page. I will only focus on one, and that will be field order. In other words, I will show you how to reorganize the message information on the subject list. For example, I prefer to hear the subject of the message before I hear who sent it. So let's start rearranging.
Press SHIFT+TAB 3 times. You should hear something like: "Not selected, importance". Don't worry if it says something different. I tend to tinker and my option may have changed from the default. Go through the list to familiarize yourself with the options using your ARROW keys. Once you start moving through the list, there are two buttons that appear; "Move Up" and "Move down". These can be accessed via the TAB and SHIFT+TAB keys, or you can access them without leaving the list by pressing ALT+U and ALT+D accordingly. In this way, you can rearrange the list of fields to your liking. Use the ARROW keys to verify your handy work. When you're done, tab to the "Ok" button and press ENTER. To quit without saving, press the ESCAPE key twice, or tab to "cancel" and press ENTER.
Going on the premise that you did make changes, navigate through the message list to see if they are to your liking. If not, go through the steps above to tweak it further, or bring it back to what it was.
There are many ways of customizing your computer's workspace. Reorganizing the fields within a message list is one way to speed up message navigation. The above process may be daunting at first, however, with practice, it'll become a breeze.
If you have the latest version of JAWS, you can use built-in Jaws customization for the Outlook listview. This can be found by pressing JAWSKEY+F2 and then choosing Customize Outlook Message List".
