Surviving On Facebook
Now that we've tackled the Facebook sign up, let's look at a few different ways of accessing the system.
If you haven't subscribed to Facebook yet, you'll want to read my previous entry on the topic:
Subscribing to Facebook: http://goo.gl/6wfyP
Now onto the entry.
For most people, the main site will work just fine. You can use either Internet Explorer or Firefox and navigate the site the same way you usually would any other site; using the built-in Jaws navigation keys. You can revisit Jaws tips 9, 10 and 11 for a refresher on these keys.
With Facebook, depending on what action you take, many things get updated on the page and then Jaws gets confused. Well, perhaps it's me getting confused, but I'll never admit it. <smile> So there is an option at our disposal.
There is a Facebook site for mobile devices such as Cell phones and PDAs. The site removes all the flashy window dressing and gives you straight lovely uncomplicated web stuff. Okay, enough with the technical jargon, let's go visit the site.
Now, as long as you followed the instructions in my last post on how to subscribe to Facebook, you'll be able to log into this site and view the content. To Login, press CONTROL+HOME to get to the top of the page. Press the letter F to get to the first edit field and press ENTER to turn on forms mode. Type in your email address and then press TAB. Type in your password, tab until you hear "Log In Button" and press ENTER.
So now what?
Well, Facebook is a portal to parallel universes and ancient civilizations. Oh oops, that's the show Sliders. Hold on a sec… Facebook is indeed a portal, but it's a way of sharing information to people and groups. For example, you can update your status. By pressing the letter F until you hear "What's on your mind?" Enter forms mode and type in whatever you want the whole world to know; within reason of course. Press tab to the "Share" button and press ENTER. Now everyone will know that you're enjoying a nice coffee on a Sunday morning in your bathrobe. Because, everyone wants to know, right?
Speaking of groups, let me show you how to add one to your list.
Adding a group:
Press JAWS+F7 for the links list. Press the letter G to move to groups and press ENTER. You can investigate the screen if you wish. I will show you how to find a group here. Press the letter F to get to the search area and press ENTER to start forms mode. Type "mycnib", that's, "m y c n i b" (all one word) and press ENTER.
One result should show up. It will be right after the "search" button.
Tab to "join group" and press ENTER. Now Facebook will show you a summary of the group and you need to click on the "Become A Fan" link to confirm that you really want to join. This group will then be added to your groups list. To visit the group, simply go to the group list page as shown above and press ENTER on the group name. You will then be able to read the latest happenings in that group and even comment if you wish. Here is the direct link to the group:
Standard Facebook page: www.facebook.com/mycnib
Mobile Page: http://m.facebook.com/mycnib
So much to learn:
I have but scratched the surface of Facebook and its myriads of services. This social networking system changes daily. Hopefully, I have given you enough for you to investigate this on your own. Just remember to play it safe when you post information as Facebook is a public forum. I would suggest also checking the settings page and see what privacy options you have.
Facebook is a portal of social networking. The main page can be used fairly well with Jaws navigation keys, but there is an alternative. Facebook mobile is a quick and easy way to navigate through the site.
Did you notice the shortcut keys within both Facebook sites? Pressing ALT+0 will bring you to the home link. Pressing ALT+3 brings you to the Inbox; yes, you even get Facebook Email.
