Youtube, the accessible way:
Since its inception, YouTube has grown by leaps and bounds. This used to be a platform for amateur video and the like, but now organizations have embraced the video forum and appreciate its value at reaching out to their clientele. Well, enough with flattering YouTube, let's get right into it.
YouTube, the easy way:
I could show you how to access YouTube via its web page, listing a bunch of shortcuts and such. But why do that when there are a couple of accessible options which make viewing YouTube Videos a breeze.
Let's have a look.
Visit the following link:
I would urge you to save this link in your favourites folder. To do this, press ALT+A, press ENTER on "Add to Favourites", ENTER and you're done.
Let's watch a video:
Have a look at the structure of this page. It boasts easy navigation and is pretty straightforward. You can compare it to the main YouTube page if you wish and you will notice quite a difference. The standard YouTube page is useable, however there is a fair amount of cursoring involved.
I will give you a few pointers on how to get things done quickly on the accessible page.
Let's go to the top of the page with the CONTROL+HOME key combination. From here, press SHIFT+F twice. This will take you straight to the search edit box. Now, for our exercise, we will do a search for muppet. Press ENTER to turn on Forms Mode. Remember, forms mode is the special Jaws editing function used within internet browsers. Newer versions of Jaws will turn forms mode on for you automatically, so you may ignore this step if this is the case. You will know if this happens with an audio sound; high pitch for "forms mode on" and low pitch for "forms mode off".
So, from here, type in "muppet" (without the quotes), tab to the "Go" button and press ENTER.
Wait a few seconds and results will be listed below. Press TAB to go through the list. When you hear one that might be of interest, press ENTER. The videos address will be copied into the YouTube Address edit box. That's the first edit box you encounter on this page. Please note, you can also manually copy a Youtube address in this edit box as well.
Why isn't it playing? Well, by activating one of the links, you've essentially put your video into the player, now you have to go push "play".
Easy as pie. Press the letter B twice and you should be on the "play" button. Press ENTER and you'll be on your way. You can press B and SHIFT+B to move through the various buttons such as "pause", "Stop", "louder", "quieter and "mute"". Pressing ENTER on each of these buttons will activate them.
Another accessible YouTube page is found at the following link:
This one is even simpler than the previous page. Just enter your search term within the search edit box and press ENTER. Results will be shown on a new page. TAB through the results and press ENTER on the video you'd like to watch. Media controls are buttons, so you can use the same method as mentioned above to cycle through them. This particular interface does not have volume controls unfortunately.
So, there you have it. Two different interfaces for accessing YouTube videos. Try them out and see what you think. Feel free to send me comments.
