Did you know that there are thousands of audio books in the CNIB Library? But these audio books are different from the ones you can purchase from your local bookstore. What makes the CNIB Library’s audio collection unique is our use of the DAISY (Digital Accessible Information System) format.
Unlike typical audio books, DAISY books are multifaceted. They are completely navigable, meaning you can skip from chapter to chapter, page to page or even sentence to sentence, similar to the way you would skip from part to part in a print book. Readers can place numerous bookmarks, making it easier to return to important sections. DAISY format is also used around the world, so it is a standard for digital materials for those who are blind or partially sighted. However, anyone who loves to read but has difficulty reading print will enjoy the many benefits to reading DAISY books.
At the CNIB Library, many of our DAISY books are printed on CDs and sent to people who are blind or partially sighted for them to use on a stand alone DAISY player, but there are other ways that Canadians can access and listen to their DAISY books and magazines. You can download and play your DAISY books on your computer using DAISY playback software, on your mobile phone, using one of the many apps available, on MP3 players or on your iPhone, iPod or iPad.
The versatility of DAISY books means that people of all ages can access their favourite reading materials. Many older adults enjoy DAISY books because they are easier to navigate than cassette tapes. Many DAISY stand alone players are built with large buttons that are easier to operate for older adults and leisure reading.
People of younger generations enjoy being able to listen to their favourite books or magazines on their portable device, such as their phone or MP3 player. The navigation and bookmark option also makes it easy for students to make note of important chapters for their novel studies or independent reading projects. The quality of DAISY recordings is often clearer and easier to hear, a plus for anyone. There is also the benefit of fitting your book on only one CD instead of multiple cassette tapes.
