Almost everyone, at some point, has planned ahead to avoid disaster by carrying a spare, whether it's a spare tire, spare keys, or some spare change. It only makes sense that a person with vision loss does the same by carrying a spare pair of eyes. The smartphone app, "Be My Eyes", allows a person with vision loss to do just that!
The app uses a live video connection to match a person with vision loss to a pool of sighted volunteers who can lend their eyes for a few minutes. The volunteer can assist with a variety of tasks like identifying an expiry date on a carton of milk, colour coordinating an outfit, or reading a receipt, street sign or recipe on a food package.
"Be My Eyes" is very easy to use. Simply launch the app and tap on the "connect to first available helper" button. Now you can describe the problem and point the camera to what needs to be seen. It's that simple!
The "Be My Eyes" app is available at no cost, but in my mind it is priceless! At some point, anyone with vision loss can benefit from a spare pair of eyes in their back pocket.
