Introducing Zagga Entertainment: Described Video... On Demand!
by Kevin Shaw
video (DV) while watching a movie or TV show can make the difference between getting
the joke and missing out on a pop-culture reference—like that time when
you watched Family Guy and they did a “like that time when” cutaway. DV helps us get a key plot element that links the entire story together, like
the spinning top in Inception or Andy’s poster in the Shawshank Redemption.
Described video narrates on-screen action, settings, costumes and other visual elements in
between lines of dialogue. DV is used by people living with vision loss to enjoy TV, movies and other types of visual entertainment.
Today, DV is
available on regular cable channels, on AMI TV, in movie theatres or on DVDs.
Some streaming services have started offering DV as well, however the accessibility can vary greatly.
There is a new service that has just launched called
Zagga TV. My name is Kevin Shaw, and I’m the founder and CEO of Zagga. I
started the company after being frustrated with navigating silent DVD menus and
finding that many online video-on-demand (VOD) services were inaccessible with
my screen reader. After years of hard work, I’m very excited to announce that
Zagga has just launched its service and I’m inviting you to check it out.
What is Zagga?
Zagga is a fully
accessible subscription VOD service featuring movies and TV shows with DV. Our
service is available via an accessible website and a mobile apps in the
works. Zagga was designed to work well with assistive technology.
How Does it Work?
Browse from a
variety of titles, easily search and navigate the site and play all of our
titles with DV—all without navigating difficult menus or downloading special
classic films like DOA and Animal Farm, great films from the National Film
Board of Canada and classic TV such as the Andy Griffith Show and the Dick Van
Dyke Show. Watch documentaries, family programming and educational programs on
your schedule. We’ll be adding more content soon, such as Hollywood movies,
Canadian content, children’s content and independent films that aren’t
described anywhere else.
Want to check it

Zagga was recently featured on the Cool Blind Tech podcast and on Newstalk 1010 radio in Toronto. I was also asked to give a TEDX Talk for Ryerson University where I demonstrated the power of described video to an audience of over 300 students. You can watch it for free on Zagga along with other content on the Zagga home page.
If you have any
questions, send an email to email@example.com.
Zagga could not
have come into being without the support of CNIB and the Ryerson
DMZ. Thank you to both organizations for
their continued support and friendship throughout the Zagga journey.
