I can’t believe that 2016 is coming to an end and I am days
away from packing up my running shoes and heading to Orlando, Florida for the
Disney Run Dopey Challenge.
this, you ask. Well, it is a 78km run done over four days
throughout the various Disney parks. My guide and I, along with our
friend Richard and his guide, will start with a short 5 km sprint on day one,
10 km on day two, a half marathon on day three and finally a full 42km marathon
on day four!
Think we’re crazy? Well, so do we…but it is for a good cause.
If we are going to put ourselves through all of this pain and suffering, we
wanted to make sure someone in need would benefit. So we are asking that
people support our run by donating to help purchase Orbit Braille Reader 20s for blind
students in Rwanda.
Did you know only 7% of published works
worldwide are available to people who are blind? In fact, in developing
countries, like Rwanda, only 1 in every 100 books are available in an
accessible format. This is the reality for the children at the Blessing School
for the Visually Impaired in Rwanda. This school is a haven where a small group
of students can learn for the first time that not having sight doesn't
mean not having a future. In a part of the world where being blind is still
considered a stigma, the Blessing School for the Visually Impaired is embracing
the opportunity to teach the community that is not the case.
believes that everyone has the right to read. For that reason, CNIB helped
develop the Orbit Braille Reader 20, the first affordable, refreshable and
portable braille reader. The Orbit Braille Reader 20 will open up the
world of literacy for people who are blind worldwide. Most braille readers cost
thousands of dollars, but this device provides new opportunities for literacy
and the love of reading for just $499. You can visit cnib.ca/Orbit Reader for
more information about the braille raeder.
is to raise enough money to provide 15 Orbit Braille Reader 20 units to
the students at the Blessing school for the Visually Impaired.
